Stories of Black Leadership III: Inspiring Legacies

The Stories of Black Leadership series was sponsored by J.P. Morgan.

Inspiring Legacies was the third and final part of the Stories of Black Leadership photographic and oral history series. This exhibition shines a spotlight on present-day Black female leaders.

Introduction

Inspiring Legacies is a portrait commission by award-winning photographer Misan Harriman that aims to make visible the journeys of pioneering Black British women who have excelled beyond measure, inspired many and left a lasting legacy that builds up those around us.

As Black Cultural Archives, the home of Black British history, celebrates its 40th anniversary, we look forward to our next 40 years and reflect on upon the significance of legacy. BCA’s history is filled with leading Black women. In reflecting on our own history of inspirational women, we proudly look outward to Black female leadership across Britain. In this final exhibition, we hear the personal experiences of five women in leadership: Dame Elizabeth Anionwu, Bishop Rose Hudson-Wilkin MBE, Claire Ighodaro CBE, Dame Donna Kinnair, and Jacky Wright.

We look at what Black female leadership once meant and what it means today, the differing types of leadership from the strong Black woman narrative, to the often un-recognised leadership role Black women have played in being of service to others. We celebrate their many ground-breaking inspirational achievements, all whilst paving the way for future generations.

Honouring legacies allows us to consider the paths that paved the way to our present-day successes, whilst inspiring future generations on the possibilities for future leadership. To celebrate the final instalment of this thought-provoking series on Black female leaders, Inspiring Legacies is presented here alongside previous exhibits, Radiating Greatness and Breaking Barriers’. Each exhibit allows us to bear witness to the excellence present amongst Britain’s Black women. These were first unveiled in 2018 and 2019 respectively at the London headquarters of J.P. Morgan.
